Designing Your Player Experience Questionnaire

Player Experience Alignement Workshop

If a game’s vision is ‘Where are we going?’, then the current player experience is ‘Are we there yet?’, it’s how close the team is to their vision.

Team playtesting is an activity where the team play their game for the purpose of creating team alignment on the player experience. To achieve this however, we will first need to create a player experience questionnaire.

Workshop Purpose

In this workshop we will create a player experience questionnaire (PXQ) tailored to your game. This PXQ will be used by each member of the team during internal playtest sessions to capture their individual perceptions of the game, then these can be discussed to create an aligned account of the player experience.

How Does Team Playtesting Help the Team and Game?

Team Playtesting helps the team and game by:

  • Measuring the player experience - together we will create a custom questionnaire to measure the player experience of your game.

  • Creating team alignment - you will see how your colleagues perceive the current player experience, then create a single shared account of the player experience.

  • Encouraging action - having a team aligned on what action to take increases the chances of action being taken.

Workshop Outline

This is a 1/2 day workshop.

  • Introduction - Purpose of the workshop, to create a Player Experience Questionnaire (PXQ) (15 mins)

  • Vision Recap - Game vision recap - reminder of the intended player experience, this is what we are measuring against (10 mins)

  • Group Exercise - Mapping game features to game vision (1 hour)

  • Group Exercise - Creating the Player Experience Questionnaire for team playtesting (1 hour)

  • Group Exercise - Playtest! Team playtest of your game and trying out the PXQ (1.5 hours)

Format: Remote video (Zoom/Hangouts/Teams etc), or on-site.

Note: You will need to have already completed the Game Vision Alignment Check workshop before doing this workshop. To create the most effective player experience questionnaire possible, we first need to know what it is we are measuring against, i.e. the game’s vision. The two workshops can be done together in 1 full day, i.e. Vision Alignment in the morning, then Player Experience Alignment in the afternoon.

Who Should Attend?

Creative directors, designers, leads, and producers would be ideally suited to participate in this workshop. If you are responsible for informing the direction and player experience of your game, then you will find this workshop useful.

Up to a maximum of 20 people can participate.
