Most games studios have a vision statement, a motivating description of where they want to be in 5-10 years. It is the function of studio leadership to steer the company to this destination, but is each person on the leadership team interpreting the vision statement in the same way?

Workshop Purpose

The purpose of this workshop is to align the leadership team on the studio’s vision. It is assumed that a vision for the studio already exists, this workshop checks how each person on the team is interpreting that vision. Are the interpretations the same, or different? In other words, are the leadership team working together to help the studio get to the same place, or are they pulling it apart in different directions?

How does the Studio Vision Alignment Check Help?

This workshop is designed to evaluate if each person on the leadership team is interpreting the studio’s vision in the same way. There are two main benefits to doing this:

  1. Is each person on the leadership team aligned on taking the studio to the same destination?

  2. Is each person on the leadership team aligned on what organisational change is needed in order to reach that destination?

When Should The Studio Vision Alignment Be Checked?

Although the studio’s vision can be checked at any time, there are particular moments where it might be more important to check than others, including:

  • Immediately after a new vision is set.

  • Following a change in leadership structure - people joining, or leaving.

Workshop Outline

This is a 1/2 day workshop.

  • Introduction - company vision and interpretation issues. (20 mins)

  • Studio Vision Alignment Check Exercise - I step the leadership team through the Studio Vision Alignment Check exercise, this captures how each person is currently interpreting the studio’s vision. (Approx 30 mins)

  • Discussion - Reveal of the findings which highlight variation in the studio vision interpretation, i.e. are we all taking the company to the same place or not. Discussion is centered around surfacing where and why these variations occur. (Approx. 1-2 hours)

  • Alignment - Building upon the findings we create an aligned studio vision - a single, clear, destination. (1 hour)

Format: Remote video (Zoom/Hangouts/Teams etc), or on-site.
